JUNE 3rd - 5th, 2011
5th Annual Blue Bridge Festival
Location: Sutton, Newmarket, Unionville
A River of music, poetry and history make York Region a cultural destination this spring! The 5th annual Blue Bridge Festival is set to start your summer off on the “right note.” Take part in a celebration of our historic community with some of Canada's finest actors, musicians, poets and artists in a weekend of great music of all kinds. With a mixture of free concerts and gated events, the Festival is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between the arts, hosted by the Ardeleana Chamber Music Society and their resident musicians, the Ardeleana Trio.
Your weekend begins on Friday night, at the Georgina Pioneer Village at 7:30 pm. Enjoy refined chamber musicians, the Blue Bridge Festival Choir, jazz and folk artists, and leading Canadian poets in an intimate setting. You will be transported into the past by William Lyon Mackenzie himself, played by Georgina’s own songwriter and entertainer, Magoo.
On Saturday, enjoy free street festival performances for the whole family on historic Main Street, Newmarket, 12– 4 pm. Mackenzie continues to be your guide, leaving Elman Campbell Museum at 1 pm and tracing the route of the 1837 Rebellion to tell the stories behind the venues that play host to a diverse collection of music and spoken word performances ranging from folk singer Marie-Lynn Hammond to story opera by ArdeleanaMusic to the Blue Bridge French Horn trio.
Saturday evening will close with a Gala concert. The concert is a collection of works by Brahms and Haydn, and includes the Mary Gardiner Memorial Premiere of a new work by a young York Region composer for youth orchestra.
Head to the Varley Gallery and Main Street Unionville on Sunday. "Jonathon's Storm," a family-oriented story opera by the festival’s director, Brenda Muller, will have its official premiere. The young artist in your family can register at the Varley Gallery for “Faces in the Storm,” an art and drama workshop with director Sonia Norris. Participants in the workshop will be invited to be part of the official premiere. The Blue Bridge Festival offers a jam-packed weekend of interactive and inspiring fun.

JUNE 18th, 2011
Highland Games
Location: Sutton Fairgrounds
Hours: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The Highland Gathering goes far back in time when the men of the highlands first began to compete in various tests of strength, the playing of highland music, and of highland dancing.
It is said that Kings used these events to test men for battle… they were tested for strength, endurance, stamina and agility. The best competitors were given the higher ranks on the battle field.
The scene of a Highland Gathering is one of the most colourful and stirring occasions with men in kilts competing in the heavy contests of strength, the dancers regale in splendid colour and the distinctive music from the pipes and drums.
The Highland settlers brought their traditions along with them and we celebrate these traditions at Highland Gatherings around the world. We hope you will join us on Saturday, June 18, 2011!
